Who We Are |
| Attorney William Mayo was
born and raised in California. He received his undergraduate degree
from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1973. While
still considering his future, in 1974, attorney Mayo sought the allure of
the ocean and obtained employment as a merchant seaman on board a U.S. registered
vessel. After assisting a fellow crewman in writing a letter to the
Captain over an insignificant matter, attorney Mayo found himself constructively
discharged from his job by his employer for allegedly engaging in what turned
out to be “protected union activities”. Seeking redress
in the federal courts, and after prevailing in a week-long trial in Houston,
Texas, attorney Mayo won both reinstatement to his former employment, as
well as an award of all back-pay for the time he was off work. Armed
with a scholarship fund for law school, and having experienced the life
of Two Years Before The Mast (Richard Henry Dana, Jr.) in 1977,
attorney Mayo enrolled as a full-time student at Southwestern University
School of Law, ultimately, receiving his J.D. degree in 1980. Attorney
Mayo sat for the California State Bar exam in the summer of 1980, and was
admitted to practice law in California that very same year. Not satisfied with a mere J.D. degree, in the Fall of 1980, attorney Mayo enrolled in an advance course of study at Boston University School of Law, in Boston, MA. In 1981, attorney Mayo graduated from Boston University School of Law with an advanced law degree, an LL.M. degree. Subsequently, attorney Mayo returned to California and began his initial practice of law in the City of Beverly Hills. Persuaded that Northern California was more suitable to both his professional as well as extracurricular interests, in 1982, attorney Mayo founded his own law practice in San Francisco. As a result of his extended fishing and hunting sojourns throughout Northern California, and finding the allure of California’s Sacramento Valley even more overpowering, in 1998, attorney Mayo relocated his practice to Chico where he established the Mayo Law Clinic, and where he practices today. With a rather long history – 23 years – of protecting the downtrodden and those who cannot, and could not, protect themselves against others, particularly, those individuals facings charges by the government (city, county, state or federal governments), attorney Mayo has become a truly accomplished attorney, with primary emphasis in defending individuals against government criminal and/or administrative charges. Attorney Mayo’s mission as a lawyer has been to continue protecting individuals against any and all governmental suits, and doing so in a manner which preserves his commitment to excellence and, at the same time, provides the very finest possible legal defense to each and every one of his clients. Attorney Mayo is currently a member in good standing of the State Bar of California and is admitted to the bar of the United States Supreme Court, the California Supreme Court, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Central, Eastern and Northern U.S. District Courts, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, the U.S. Court of International Trade, the U.S. Tax Court and the U.S. Military Courts. Attorney Mayo is also a member in good standing of the Butte County Bar Association, the California Attorneys for Criminal Justice, the California Public Defenders Association, the American Bar Association, and is a member of the ABA's Criminal Law Section and the State Bar's Criminal Law Section.
